These are the eleven roles we recruit for. They're the same eleven in the dropdown on the application form, so read the one you're thinking about before you pick it. People get pulled off jobs for choosing a role they weren't ready for, and that costs them the next call too.

Two things everyone asks first. Shift length and pay both vary by contract, by client, and by state, so what's below describes how these jobs generally run in the industry, not a guarantee of what any specific deployment pays or demands. Debris monitor

The debris monitor is the most commonly hired role in disaster recovery work and the usual way into the industry. You're assigned to a loading crew and you often stay with that crew all day. As the grapple truck works down the right of way, you document what's being loaded, where it came from, and whether it qualifies for reimbursement.

In practice that means walking or riding the route with a tablet or a paper ticket book. You record the address or GPS point, note the debris type, photograph anything unusual, and issue a load ticket to the driver before the truck leaves for the disposal site. You flag material that doesn't belong, which is usually debris someone dragged out from private property onto the public right of way, construction debris from a remodel that has nothing to do with the storm, hazardous material, etc. You also note leaners and hangers for the tree crews.

The reason the job exists is money. Public agencies get reimbursed for eligible debris removal, and the ticket you write is the evidence. An undocumented load may not get paid for. A ticket that says something inaccurate is worse than no ticket at all, and it can surface in an audit years later.

Certification. No license required. Most contracts want 40 hour OSHA or will require it before you go to the field, and some clients run their own short certification course on arrival. You need to be comfortable with a smartphone, because most ticketing is electronic now.

Shifts. Daylight operations, long days, usually six or seven days a week during an active push.

What disqualifies someone. Not being able to stand and walk outdoors all day. Sloppy or falsified documentation, which ends the assignment immediately. Not being able to hold the line with residents and crews who want you to write something that isn't true. Failed drug screen or background check where the client requires one.

Tower monitor

A tower monitor works at the debris management site (DMS), sitting in a metal tower positioned so you can see straight down into the bed of every truck that pulls in. Your job is to call the load. You look at the truck, judge how full it actually is as a percentage of its certified capacity, and record that number on the ticket.

That single number determines what gets paid. A truck certified at forty cubic yards that arrives eighty percent full is billed as thirty two cubic yards. Drivers have an incentive to see a fuller truck than you do, and part of the job is being the person who doesn't move on that. You will be argued with. Consistency across hundreds of calls a day is the whole skill.

Beyond load calls, you verify the truck's certification placard matches the truck, watch for material that shouldn't be in the load, and keep the ticket sequence clean so the site's numbers reconcile at the end of the day. On a busy site you may call several hundred loads in a shift with a line of trucks waiting.

Certification. No license required. Same OSHA expectations as field monitoring. Some clients require a short internal certification on load calling before you work a tower on your own.

Shifts. Tied to site hours, which usually open before the first haul and close after the last one. Long days seated in a tower, exposed to weather, heat, and noise.

What disqualifies someone. Discomfort with heights, because the tower is elevated by design. Inconsistent calls. Any willingness to adjust a number because someone asked. Sun and heat intolerance is a practical disqualifier too, because there's very little shade and no way to leave the position.

Load site monitor

The load site monitor runs the ground level of the DMS. Where the tower monitor is looking down into trucks, you're working the gate and the pad. Trucks check in with you, you confirm the truck is certified and the placard is valid, you issue or collect tickets, and you send the driver to the right tipping area for what they're carrying.

Segregation is a big part of it. Vegetative debris, construction and demolition material, white goods, electronics, and household hazardous waste all go to different places, and mixing them creates a disposal problem that's expensive to unwind. If a load arrives contaminated, you're the person who catches it before it hits the pile.

You also manage traffic. A busy site has haul trucks entering, loaders working the pile, grinders running, and residents showing up with self haul debris, all in the same space. Keeping that flow orderly is a safety job first and a throughput job second.

Certification. No license required. 40 hour OSHA is commonly expected or required before field assignment. Traffic control or flagger training is a real advantage and sometimes required by the client.

Shifts. Site hours, long days, on your feet outdoors the whole time, in dust and diesel exhaust.

What disqualifies someone. Not staying alert around moving heavy equipment, which is the main hazard on a DMS. Not being willing to turn a truck around. Poor recordkeeping, since your tickets have to reconcile against the tower's. Failed drug screen or background check where required.

Environmental monitor

Environmental monitors handle the part of the debris stream that isn't just wood and drywall. That includes household hazardous waste, white goods containing refrigerant, electronics, fuel and oil containers, asbestos containing material in older structures, and on fire jobs, the ash itself.

Day to day, you identify and segregate that material in the field, document what was found and where, make sure it's staged and containerized correctly, and coordinate the specialized handling it takes. On wildfire debris projects the role gets much bigger. You may handle dust suppression, air monitoring, verifying that crews are working inside the right exclusion zones, confirming decontamination procedures, and documenting soil sampling.

You're also the person who stops work. If a crew opens up something unexpected, or conditions change in a way that makes the operation unsafe, calling that out is part of the job, not an escalation.

Certification. This role carries real certification requirements, and they vary a lot by state and by contract. Wildfire ash work in the West usually takes more than debris work on the Gulf coast. Asbestos awareness, hazardous waste operations training, and state specific credentials come up often. List everything you hold on the application, including the cards you assume nobody cares about. Western ash work is where they turn out to matter.

Shifts. Usually matched to the crews you're supporting, so daylight operations and long days. Air monitoring duties can run past crew hours.

What disqualifies someone. Missing or expired certifications. Not being able to pass a respirator fit test or medical clearance where respiratory protection is required. Facial hair that prevents a seal is a real and common disqualifier on ash jobs. Any tendency to defer on a safety call.

Project admin

Project admin is the office side of a debris mission, usually run out of a trailer or a borrowed room near the work. Every ticket written in the field and every load called at the tower comes back, gets entered, gets matched against its pair, and gets rolled into a daily report. When the field and site numbers don't agree, you're the one who finds out why.

The work is ticket reconciliation, data entry into the client's system, timekeeping for crews, tracking subcontractor equipment and hours, maintaining truck certification records, building daily and weekly reports, and keeping the file organized well enough to survive an audit. Reimbursement claims on this work can get reviewed years after the job closes. The standard isn't whether it makes sense to you now. It's whether it will make sense to an auditor later.

It's also the role most likely to be the first person a resident, an inspector, or a county official talks to, so a fair amount of it is answering questions calmly while doing something else.

Certification. No license required. Solid spreadsheet skills and fast, accurate data entry matter more than credentials. Prior experience with debris ticketing systems is a strong advantage. 40 hour OSHA is often expected because you'll be on or near active sites.

Shifts. Long days that usually start before the crews and end after the last tickets come in. Often seven days a week during an active push.

What disqualifies someone. Careless data entry, since an error here multiplies across every report downstream. Not being able to work under time pressure at the end of a shift when everything arrives at once. Discomfort telling a supervisor their numbers don't add up.

CDL driver

CDL drivers haul the debris. Depending on the job that's a tandem or tri axle dump, a dump trailer, a walking floor trailer, a roll off truck, or a water truck for dust control on the site. The cycle is simple and repetitive. Load on the right of way, run to the DMS, get called by the tower, tip, and go back.

The complications aren't the driving. They're the conditions. You're working roads that may still be damaged, with debris on the shoulder, signals out, residents walking in the roadway, and unfamiliar routes. Backing into a tipping area on a crowded pad with loaders working nearby is where most incidents happen. Your truck also has to be certified and placarded before it hauls a single load, and the ticket discipline is on you at both ends of every cycle.

On wildfire jobs the work changes. Loads may move under manifest, tarping requirements are stricter, and haul routes are fixed and monitored.

Certification. Valid Class A or Class B CDL depending on the equipment, current DOT medical card, clean enough motor vehicle record to be accepted by the client's insurance, and compliance with drug and alcohol clearinghouse requirements. Some jobs require you to bring your own truck and some provide it. If you run your own truck, say so on the application. It changes which jobs you can be called for.

Shifts. Daylight hauling in most debris operations, with hours capped by federal hours of service rules no matter how long the site is open.

What disqualifies someone. Suspended or downgraded CDL, expired medical card, prohibited status in the clearinghouse, or a motor vehicle record the client's insurer will not cover. Failed drug screen. Recent preventable accidents.

Heavy equipment operator

Heavy equipment operators do the actual removal. The most common machine on a debris job is the knuckleboom grapple truck or a grapple loader working the right of way, picking up piles and loading haul trucks. Beyond that the fleet includes excavators with thumbs or grapples, wheel loaders, dozers, and at the debris management site, horizontal grinders and tub grinders processing vegetative debris.

Right of way work is precise despite the size of the machine. You're working within feet of mailboxes, parked cars, water meters, fences, and people who keep walking up to ask questions. Property damage caused during removal comes straight out of the job, so the operators who get called back are the ones who are fast without touching anything they shouldn't.

At the DMS the job is different. Building and managing the pile, feeding a grinder consistently, and keeping the pad organized so haul trucks can move. On fire jobs, operators work lot by lot removing ash and structural debris to a set depth, which is closer to careful excavation than to bulk loading.

Certification. Requirements vary by client and by machine. Documented experience on the specific equipment matters more than any single card. 40 hour OSHA is commonly required, and some clients require their own equipment evaluation before you run a machine on their job. Put your actual hours and the specific machines on the application. That is what gets checked against the contract.

Shifts. Daylight operations, long days, often six or seven days a week during a push.

What disqualifies someone. Claiming time on equipment you haven't actually run, which becomes obvious within an hour and ends the assignment. Damage caused by working faster than your ability. Failed drug screen. Ignoring spotters or working outside the swing zone protocol.

Skid steer operator

Skid steer operators handle everything the big machines can't reach. Narrow streets, alleys, driveways, backyards, sidewalks, courtyards, and on wildfire jobs, individual residential lots. With a grapple bucket you clear and load debris. With a standard bucket you move ash, soil, and sediment. With a sweeper or a broom attachment you clean the roadway behind the removal crews, which is a bigger part of the job than people expect.

Compact track loaders do most of this work in soft or wet conditions, which is common after flooding. On post fire lots the machine is doing controlled excavation, taking ash and debris down to a set depth without over excavating, because everything you remove has to be hauled and everything you leave has to be sampled.

Working this close to structures and property is what makes the role harder than it looks. There's usually a homeowner watching. Damage to a driveway, a fence, or an irrigation line is visible immediately and it creates a claim.

Certification. No license required in most cases. Documented time on skid steers and compact track loaders, and comfort with multiple attachments, is what gets you placed. 40 hour OSHA is commonly expected. On ash jobs, the same respiratory protection requirements that apply to laborers apply to you.

Shifts. Daylight operations matched to the crew you're supporting. Long days.

What disqualifies someone. Overstated experience. Repeated property damage. Not being able to pass a respirator fit test where ash work requires it. Failed drug screen or background check where the client requires one.

Arborist

Arborists handle the trees that are still standing and shouldn't be. After a wind event the right of way is full of leaners, trees pushed over but hung up on something, and hangers, broken limbs suspended in the canopy waiting to come down on whoever walks under them. Both get documented individually, assessed, and removed under their own line item instead of as bulk debris.

The daily work is assessment and removal. You evaluate whether a tree meets the hazard criteria for the program, document it with photographs and measurements, and then take it down, which usually means climbing and rigging because there's a house or a road or a power line underneath. On fire jobs the work shifts to hazard trees, fire killed timber along roads and corridors that has to come down before crews can work below it. That timber is unpredictable. Fire damage hollows out trunks in ways you can't see from the ground.

Assessment carries as much weight as the cutting. If a tree doesn't actually meet the criteria and it comes down anyway, that's an ineligible cost and it gets caught.

Certification. ISA certification is often required or strongly preferred, and some programs require specific hazard tree assessment credentials. Chainsaw qualification, aerial rescue capability, and current first aid and CPR are commonly expected. List what you carry and when it expires. An expired card is the most common reason a qualified arborist gets passed over.

Shifts. Daylight only. This work does not run after dark. Long days under load in full protective gear.

What disqualifies someone. Expired or missing certifications. Climbing or rigging without the required protective equipment. Working within minimum approach distance of energized conductors without utility qualification, which is the line between an arborist and a certified utility forester. Failed drug screen.

Certified utility forester

This is the role for vegetation work around energized power lines, and it's a different qualification from general arborist work, not a senior version of it. After a storm or a fire, restoring power depends on clearing the line corridor, and only qualified line clearance personnel are allowed to work inside the minimum approach distances to energized conductors.

The work covers assessing vegetation encroaching on distribution and transmission corridors, identifying and removing danger trees that could fall into the line, coordinating with the utility on clearances and outages, and documenting the work for the utility's own records. On fire recovery, the corridor work runs long after the immediate restoration is finished, because fire killed timber along a right of way stays a threat for years and utilities move steadily through it.

You're often working alongside utility crews, which means their rules, their briefings, and their pace. Coordination discipline matters as much as tree skill.

Certification. Line clearance qualification is required and it isn't optional or waivable. Utility specific credentials, ANSI Z133 familiarity, and current first aid, CPR, and aerial rescue are typical. Requirements vary by utility, and a qualification accepted by one may need supplementing for another. Tell us which utility you qualified under and when. That is the first thing anyone will ask.

Shifts. Daylight for most vegetation work, though restoration events can push crews into extended hours. Storm restoration schedules are set by the utility.

What disqualifies someone. Not holding current line clearance qualification, full stop. Any approach distance violation. Not following the utility's briefing and lockout procedures. Failed drug screen, which utilities screen for strictly.

Laborer

Laborer is the broadest role on the list and it's real work. Hand crews clear debris from places equipment can't reach, feed chippers, cut and stack, sort material at the DMS, handle traffic control, set and maintain signage, and support every other role on site. On wildfire jobs, laborers do hand sorting of lots and help with staging and containerizing material.

It's also the most common way people get into the industry without a certification or a license. Plenty of monitors, operators, and site supervisors started on a hand crew and moved up because they showed up every day and were useful. That progression is normal here and it happens faster than in most trades, because deployments pack a lot of experience into a short time.

Chipper work in particular is not casual. Feeding a chipper is one of the most dangerous routine tasks on any debris job, and crews that treat it casually get people hurt.

Certification. None required to apply. 40 hour OSHA is commonly expected or required before field assignment. Flagger certification is a real advantage because traffic control is constant. On ash and fire debris jobs, respirator medical clearance and fit testing are required.

Shifts. Daylight operations, long days, frequently six or seven days a week during an active push, outdoors regardless of weather.

What disqualifies someone. Not being physically able to do sustained manual work in heat, cold, or rain. Steel toe boots and required protective equipment are not optional, and showing up without them sends you home. Failed drug screen or background check where the client requires one. Not showing up, which in a deployment where the whole crew shares transportation hurts everyone.
